Tank Battalion is an arcade video game developed and released by Namco in 1980. It is a top-down, maze-based shooter where players control a tank with the primary objective of defending their base, represented by an eagle, from waves of enemy tanks.

The game’s simple yet engaging mechanics laid the foundation for future titles in Namco's tank-themed games, most notably Battle City and Tank Force.
The gameplay of Tank Battalion involves maneuvering the player’s tank through a maze of destructible walls while eliminating enemy tanks that spawn from predetermined locations. Each stage is cleared once a set number of enemy tanks is destroyed. The player loses a life if their tank is hit, and the game ends if the enemy successfully destroys the player's base. The destructible environment adds a layer of strategy, as players can create new paths or expose their base by destroying walls.
Visually, Tank Battalion features the minimalist graphics typical of early 1980s arcade games, with basic sprites and simple animations. Despite its simplicity, the game was praised for its clear visuals and smooth gameplay. The sound design is also basic, with simple sound effects accompanying movement and firing. However, its responsive controls and fast-paced action helped it stand out among other arcade shooters of its time.
Tank Battalion was well-received in arcades and became one of Namco’s early hits. It was later ported to several home platforms, including the MSX and Sord M5, and was included in various Namco game compilations. The game’s success led to the release of two sequels: Battle City in 1985 for the Famicom, which expanded on the gameplay with new power-ups and multiplayer modes, and Tank Force in 1991, which introduced new enemies, weapons, and co-op play.
Today, Tank Battalion is ed as an important part of Namco’s early arcade history and as a predecessor to the more widely known Battle City. Its simple but addictive gameplay continues to appeal to retro gaming enthusiasts and can be found in several classic arcade game collections.
